**** 11/27/2010 We received a report yesterday that 4 boxes from the Hoopla series were missing. Upon investigation, all is well with all boxes, but two that had been moved previously to other spots had been moved back to their original locations. The clues have now been changed again to reflect new changes

****10/02/2010 The original Easter box went missing. A new stamp has been planted and the clues have been revised to reflect the change.

The Holiday Hoopla Letterbox series, originally planted as limited time only boxes have now been planted permanently and all boxes will be available throughout the year. Each box contains it's own logbook. There are seven boxes in the series. More may be added at a later date for other holidays.

Holiday Hoopla is located in the Mary Conklin Preserve in Canton, CT. The entrance to the Preserve and parking lot is at 144 Indian Hill Rd. Take Rte. 44 to Indian Hill Rd. The entrance is just north of Spaulding Rd on the left. Be on the lookout for a large red mailbox. This property is the site of the Ray Smith Trail. For this series, you'll be starting out on the yellow red dot trail. You can print out a trail map on the Canton Land Trust website, but these trails are pretty well marked. If you want to be safe, print one. Now on to the clues.

Park your car and head onto the yellow red dot trail on the right. Follow this trail for a while until you come to a spot trailside with a large rock on the right and a giant pine on the left. Stop here and look right for some rusty farm equipment. To the left of the rust is a large tree with logs at the base. Look here for the doves.

Make your way back to the trail and continue on right, passing through two stone walls. You'll be looking for a skinny birch tree with a blaze on it. Stop at the skinny tree and look right to a large three sister tree. Our new Easter box is tucked in the middle of the sisters. This box needs extra cover because of it's location. Please take extra time to cover well. Thanks.

Continue on the trail for a short way until you come to the intersection with the yellow green dot trail on the right. This is Tommy's trail. Follow the green trail downhill until you come to a spot trailside with three downed trees with spikey roots. In the notch of one of the trees, covered with leaves and sticks is our St. Patrick's Day box. Turn around and head back the way you came.

Once back at the intersection of yellow red dot, continue on right for a short ways. Soon you will see a very tall rotted stump on the left and the entrance to a well worn unmarked trail on the right. Follow this trail, passing through a stone wall and a rocky area. Continue on looking for a rotted tree on the right. Part of the tree looks like the opening to a tunnel or an upside down U. Check on the back side for Memorial Day.

Head back on the unmarked trail, continue on right to the intersection with the yellow trail. Go right on yellow. Pass by marker # 6. When you get to marker # 7, continue on past 6 more blazed trees. There will be a small clearing here before some mountain laurel on the right. Off trail to the right is a large rock. Find Halloween on the back side of the rock.

Continue on the yellow trail until you reach marker # 12 and a bridge. Stop here, turn around and go back 25 steps. Look in the root end of a rotted tree for Thanksgiving.

Cross over the bridge and continue on the yellow trail. Continue on until the trail makes a sharp left. Next you will pass marker # 14. Soon you will see a huge mossy rock on the right. Stop before reaching the rock and walk around to the backside. You will find Christmas in a crevice covered with sticks.

Continue on yellow back to the intersection of yellow red dot. Turn right here and follow the grassy path back to your car. Hope you enjoyed the Holiday Hoopla loop. Happy hiking.
