The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The sun appears at its lowest point in the sky, and its noontime elevation appears to be the same for several days before and after the solstice. Hence the origin of the word solstice, which comes from Latin solstitium, from sol, “sun” and -stitium, “a stoppage.” Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs either December 21 or 22, when the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn.
Planted: October 3, 2009 and replanted January 5, 2013

Level of hiking required: easy

Level of clue difficulty: easy

Starting point: YMCA of Douglas County, 1150 NW Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, OR 97471, located just a short drive from any of the Roseburg exits on I-5.

Clues: Start at the volleyball courts at the back of the YMCA. Walk SE on the pedestrian/bicycle path heading towards the baseball/softball fields.

As you approach the fenced fields, follow a narrow gravel path on your left. Walk towards the Stewart Park Butterfly Garden. Enjoy the butterfly bushes and other flowering plants that attract butterflies.

Find the bench dedicated to some fine Roseburg citizens and then look North to the small boulders in the garden.
Look for letterbox under one of them.

When finished reading stories and enjoying the stamps, be sure to seal the box carefully and hide well for future letterboxers to find.
