Llamas were our trusty pack animals during a week hiking in Oregon’s gorgeous Wallowa Mountains. These soaring granite peaks, unlike the volcanic mountains found in the rest of the state, are more like the Rockies than the Cascades. Our llama helpers were strong, beautiful to look at, well mannered and a joy to watch grazing in fields of alpine flowers. One evening, I stood face to face with my favorite, Obie, and sketched his face for this little stamp. (...and, no, they never spit at any of the humans along for the trip.) 
To the trailhead: Hurricane Creek Road can be accessed from downtown Joseph or at the southern end of Enterprise. If you are coming from Joseph, go nearly two miles. Keep right past the Grange Hall, then west/left on Pine Tree Road. From Enterprise, turn right/west in about five miles on Pine Tree Road. At the end of the road you will find Hurricane Creek Llama Ranch. Stop and wave to my friend Obie and then head back to Hurricane Creek Road. At this road turn right and go to its end, where you will find a parking area for the Hurricane Trailhead. This is a short hike and should only take about 30-45 minutes.
To the letterbox: A short distance up the trail you will go right at the junction with the Falls Creek Trail. With a cascade view at 230 degrees magnetic, look behind a piece of speckled granite nestled beneath a boulder with a baby fir as a neighbor.
