This is my first carve. I got my Masters Degree at Ball State University and wanted to make a stamp to honor my old school.

I hid it in Kokomo for a few reasons. The city is close to my house and it is on the way to Muncie where Ball State is located. When I was going to Ball State for the first time, I stopped here for lunch. For some reason, this seemed to be the time that I left childhood for good. At Ball State, I met my first wife and made a lot of decisions that really determined where I'm at in life now.

Kokomo is a blue-color town with some very solid, good people. They are conservative and church-going for the most part. The city is like a lot in the mid-west that made America strong during the 20th Century. They built this country and sent their kids to die in wars for us. However, Kokomo also has some down-sides. It has a lot of traffic and shopping plazas. There's not a lot of "culture" there. It is heavily reliant on the auto industry and hasn't done well in this recession. Even so, it is a part of my world and I will stand beside it.

Now to the clue: Go to the intersection of Markland Avenue and SR 31. Markland is the main east-west street. SR 31 is the divided highway that links Indianapolis to South Bend. Many travelors call Kokomo "stop light city" because 31 goes several miles through a congested area. Go north on 31 to Sycamore Road. It is the 2nd stoplight north of Markland. Turn left (west). Go to Ohio Street and turn left (south). Ohio Street divides Crown Point Cemetary into two. The left (east) half is where the stamp is hidden.

Crown Point is the oldest cemetary in Kokomo and the first city cemetary. It was relocated from a spot along Wildcat Creet about a mile away to be on higher ground that is less swampy. There are some interesting grave stones here.

Once on Ohio Street, enter the cemetary from the middle of the block by turning left (west). Go to the T and turn right (south). Take the next left (east) and go the the "Golightly" gravestone. Turn right here. You should be near two buildings; one is brick and the other is steel. Drive a short distance to the "Sec 20" sign and go left. Circle around the two buildings untill you are directly behind them and next to the fence. You should see a signpost that says "Section 2-20". Park and prepare to walk.

Look directly west toward the two buildings. Several rows away, you should see a tall gravestone named "McAninch". Go to the stone and look two rows behind it to a gravestone named "Clayton". Behind this stone is a clump of tall shrubbery. Circle around the shrubbery and find Charles and Eva Ricketts' gravestone. It is partially hidden by branches. Directly behind the stone, you will find my stamp. My stamp, of course, carries the image of Indiana's state bird, which is BSU's mascot!
