If you have never visited the Re-Created Fort Mandan (Winter Quarters 1804 for the Corp Of Discovery) what are you waiting for?
Well, I know it requires you to travel about 30 minutes North of Bismarck, ND, and I highly recommend that you also visit the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center either before or after you visit the Fort! (Nominal fee)
After you get a chance to check out the Fort, stand with your gaze focused toward the river, then walk about 100 steps to a path leading waterward.
This will bring you to an "Octagon" where you will begin your learnin' starting with "The Big Muddy", continue to follow the path along the river stopping along the way to learn about the Hidatsa & Mandan Farmers, Keelboats, and make sure to check out the BIG DOG! You will also realize the importance of the American Bison, and how the Corp entertained themselves during the Fall/Winter of their stay. After you learn about the Captain/Naturalist you will come upon a viewing area where you can get a good close view of the river creatures. After you are done, say goodbye to the river, and continue Northeast along the path crossing over the culvert to where the path takes a big curve toward the visitor center, when you get to "On The Hunt", look up to see a precariously perched tree.
At the base of the tree that it is balancing on is an old fallen tree with no bark, about 5 steps down will bring you to a perfectly good place for a letterbox, it's even on a handy slide out tray so you don't have to stick yer arm down some old log!
A 2 minute walk will bring you back to the lot.
I hope you enjoyed your walk through the Cottonwood Canopy! (This will be a 30 to 45 min casual walk)
