Clues

On April 21, 1856, which was the 20th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, a celebration was held at this place. The remains of Texas Rangers Capt. Samuel Hamilton Walker and Capt. Robert Addison (Ad) Gillespie, both of whom were killed in the Mexican War, were brought together and reinterred in this cemetery. Between them were buried the ashes of the Defenders of the Alamo, who had been killed and their bodies burned on the orders of the Mexican general Santa Anna. The defenders included William Travis, David Crockett, Jim Bowie, James Bonham and some 180 other Texas heroes. Walker and Gillespie were both outstanding Rangers in their lifetimes. Both had Texas counties named for them. In death, as in life, they are standing guard.
