The city of Hickman is laid out on six levels of hill overlooking the mighty Mississippi River, eight miles from the Tennessee state line to the south and across the river from Missouri. The Hickman-Dorena, MO Ferry offers year round passage across the River and is a real asset for both industry and tourism. The Hickman-Fulton County Riverport Authority provides shipment for a wide variety of agricultural grains, steel, petroleum coke, fertilizers and numerous other products. Located in the most southwestern point in Kentucky, Fulton County is a community rich in historic tradition and gracious southern living. At the highest vantage point in its county seat of Hickman is the courthouse, built in 1903 and remodeled in 1990-91. It has retained its outward Queen Anne and Dutch Colonial influence and is known to have the only known original operating Seth Thomas clock in the tower. (from Hickman, KY, Chamber of Commerce website)

Clues to letterbox: Find your way to the courthouse on top of the highest point in Hickman, KY, at the corner of Wellington and Moulton. Park near the Fulton Co. marker. Across the street behind you, notice the marker for the Courthouse Steps near the intersection street sign. These steps lead down the hill from the courthouse to the old business district near the river. Go down the steps to the first landing, then continue to the next landing, where you’ll see a second marker (Where Dixie Begins). Look carefully at the foot of this marker, tucked under the honeysuckle vines and protected by a rock for the letterbox. Please be discreet to protect the letterbox, and please rebag and replace the box carefully, with the rock on top and vines placed over it.

If you want to take the Courthouse Steps up from the bottom, they begin at the intersection of Cumberland and Carroll (hwy 94). Just left of the steps at Carroll and Kentucky, note the large Hickman, Kentucky sign, featuring a painted steamboat.

If you can brave the mighty Mississippi on the ferry, find the landing on the west edge of the town of Hickman, KY (follow signs through town to ferry landing), or across the river in Dorena, Mo. Hick Finn would have loved it!
