BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER

Brother Against Brother is a letterbox located on the grounds of the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. The museum is located in Reservoir Park. More information about the museum can be found on their website at www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org. Be sure to take time to visit the museum after you find the letterbox.

This box was planted by Redfern Rambler, Angel Doggie, and their 2 four-footed friends, Julie and Misty Rose, as part of a Dog Scout Letterbox badge.

The directions, as originally written, were not handicapped-accessible. To make this letterbox accessible, follow the directions written in the parentheses.

Please be VERY, VERY discreet and stealthy when retrieving the box—it can be a very busy location., Remember to bring your own stamp pad and keep in mind the difference between a step (one footfall) and a pace (a left plus a right footfall).

Follow the signs to the National Civil War Museum from either Market St or State St. (if entering from Market St., turn right at the split in the road, circle around the hill, turn left at the museum sign, and continue up the hill.) Once you have turned into Reservoir Park, follow the directional signs to the museum and to the blue and white visitor parking.

1. When you reach the parking area go to the lower level and drive past 4 sets of stairs, parking near the 4th set of stairs.

2. Go up 12 steps and over the crosswalk to the red and white signs. Take 8 steps past the red and white signs and turn Left. (Go to the right, around the stairs, and follow the road to the curb cut.)

3. Follow the path to the fork and “go to the Confederacy.” At the next fork, take the right turn.

4. At the next fork, choose the “Union” path and go to the red brick road. Make a right turn and find the millennium sign. Stand so that the millennium sign is touching your right hip.

5. Go straight down the brick path in front of you, crossing the drive.

6. When you get to “Moment of Mercy,” be sure to read the inscription about the brave Sgt. Richard R. Kirkland and make a note of the date of the battle and Sgt. Kirkland’s age at the time. Be sure to view Moment of Mercy from all sides, STAYING ON THE BRICK PATH.

7. After completely circling the monument, walk North until you can touch the pole with our national emblem atop it. Admire the view of North Harrisburg from this point. (After circling the monument, retrace your path across the road to the curb cut and go left.)

8. Retrace your steps from the pole for 4 paces. You should be standing on the stone for the state north of PA.

9. Turn right and walk to the 16th state stone. Be sure to take time to look at the numbers of people who served during the Civil War and the number of deaths per state. (Turn and cross 17 state stones.)

10. While standing on the 16th state stone, turn to your right and walk for the number of paces you would get if you added 36 to the day of the battle found on Moment of Mercy. (From the 17th state stone, follow the white path to the right until you get to the road.)

11. While taking a rest or having a picnic, look for the stop sign. Walk between the 2 closest trees to the stop sign. (Turn right at the road and go to the stop sign on your left.)

12. Turn left at the stop sign and take the number of steps that would be Sgt. Kirkland’s age at the time of the battle.

13. You will find what you seek in the base of the shrub on your right side.

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL THAT YOU ARE NOT SEEN RETRIEVING OR RE-PLACING THE BOX!
