1-28-21 Replanted letterbox. Clues modified for new terrain.

Our first letterbox, placed on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2009.

Close to the Hoffman Evergreen Preserve is the Wychwood Turkey Farm further down on Rt. 201 about a half mile. When our children were young, we took them to fields close by where the farm used to raise the turkeys. We would gobble at them and the whole field of turkeys would gobble back! Since they still sell fresh turkeys out of a little shack at Wychwood Turkey Farm, we thought we would trot like a turkey to our letterbox.

An easy hike that is good for children. About a 10 minute walk to the letterbox and a 10 minute return.

Take exit 90 Downtown Mystic. Coming from New London, turn left (north) on Rt. 27. Coming from Rhode Island, turn right on Rt. 27. When you come to a stop sign in Old Mystic, bear right onto North Stonington Rd. Bear right at fire station, bear right at fork, Clyde’s Cider Mill will be on your left. At stop sign (Rt. 184), continue straight across onto Rt. 201. At 1.5 miles on the left, turn into the area marked with a wooden fence and a sign “Hoffman Evergreen Preserve” (there is another wooden fence before this one on left). There is one parking space in front of the fence and parking across the street too. Be careful crossing the street.

Clues:
Go straight on trail until intersection 0. Take a left here onto the blue trail. Pass by a large hemlock grove on right. At intersection of yellow and blue “Loop Trail” sign (intersection 10) take yellow trail straight, go right through the stone wall and down the field. Pass picnic rock on right where squirrels have been known to crack nuts in the fall. Go through the stone wall in front of you, turn left and walk 10 paces along the stone wall. At the base of the big oak tree to your right, that’s where you will find the turkey nesting.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
