There is a monument marking the encampment of General Rochambeau and his army at the corner of Marion & Burritt streets in Southington(Marion), also a Civil War marker is here also.
Rochambeau and his army traveled through the state, stopping in various towns. After a parade through Southington in 1781 he and his army set up camp in this area. According to historical accounts there was a tavern across the street where the General stayed. There is a monument marking this encampment. THE MONUMENT IS BORDERED ON EITHER SIDE BY PRIVATE PROPERTY BUT THE LETTERBOX IS LOCATED ON PUBLIC MONUMENT PROPERTY. PLEASE DO NOT GO INTO NEIGHBORING YARDS.After finding the box, take time to observe the monument & read its inscription. Parking can be a problem as Marion Ave. is a very busy street. It may be easier to park on Burritt Street and hang a right on Marion ave.Go past the historical red house on your right and you will see the monument on right with stairs going up. You can find the Letterbox up the stairs past the monument and wedged in one of the small evergreen surrounding the monument. Please rehide well and use stealth.
