*** Old West Fort Series ***

The "Camp Verde" Minibox is located at Camp Verde Park, in Camp Verge, Texas, next to the old Camp Verge Store. The park is small, with few items of interest, but the Camp Store is a great stop. Go in and shop around, and have lunch!! Camp Verde was established on July 8, 1855 on the northern bank of Verde Creek, outside of Bandera Pass, as a US Army frontier post. In 1856 the camp was sent 40 camels by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis as a test of their usefulness in the cavalry (which they passed with flying colors, but due to Jeff Davis's involvement, the Army dropped the project after the war). In 1857 Albert Sidney Johnston started from this camp on his expedition against the Mormons in Utah. The post was surrendered to the Confederate States of America in 1861, and they established a new camp close to this post. US Troops reoccupied the camp in 1865, but abandoned it again on April 1, 1869. In 1949 a few ruins of the camel corrals and officers quarters remained, and today these buildings are now part of a ranch house(but altered).

Directions:
From Kerrville, go south Hwy 173 to Camp Verde. Turn left on Camp Verde rd, then quick right into circle parking for small park.

To the Minibox:
Walk to the Hwy 173 bridge, and climb up to the back of the first cement beam. From the head wall, count 5 metal ribs to where a ridge beam connects. The flat minibox is on top of this cross beam next to the end.
