In the Fall of '09 a group of 4th & 5th graders from the Chesapeake Public Charter School participated in a fun and lively project elective class called Letterboxing!
They learned how to create their own handmade personal stamps, homemade journals, put together a Letterbox, follow a compass and write clues to their letterboxes.
On the last day of class they took a hike along the beautiful shores at St. Mary's River State Park to hide their boxes.

Chesapeake Public Charter School is a K-7 public charter school that opened its doors in the fall of '07. CPCS was the first charter school to open in Southern Maryland. From the Website: "The Chesapeake Public Charter School is a diverse learning community of parents, teachers, staff, students, and local citizens actively collaborating to create a dynamic learning environment. This school provides educational opportunities for developing mind, body, and spirit through an integrated approach to academic excellence, individual expression and character development. Members of this community are compassionate world citizens who embrace life long learning. "

Directions To St. Mary's River State Park:
From points North (Washington DC, Waldorf, MD)
Take Maryland Route 5 South, go 6 miles South of Leonardtown, MD.
Take a left on Camp Cosoma Road and follow it to the end.

***This trail is heavily used, please replace boxes well so that people hiking the trail will not see them! They need to go way back into the crevices!***

Now for the CLUES!
We have hidden 7 boxes for you to find!

Box 1: "I Like Pie"
Pace Calibration – 9 paces between St. Mary’s Loop Trail sign and brown park information sign.

Begin at the brown St. Mary’s Loop Trail Head sign. (headed West)
Follow the trail (marked by white blazes).
Take 38 paces.
At bearing 320* there is a triple tree, nestled in the center of these trees you will find some Pi.

Box 2: "Agent Dot"
Starting at Box #1, go back to the trail toward the West.
Take 13 childlike size steps to white blazed tree on right.
Continue on trail to the West and take 42 steps to the stump in the middle of the trail.
Turn to the SouthWest. Look at clump of 4 trees, then take 6 steps toward them.
Then turn to the right and look in the hole at the base of the tree.
(watch out for the thorny vines!)

!!!! Box #3 has gone missing, I will replace as soon as I can!!! (1-8-12)
Box 3: "Princess"
Continue along the trail from the stump.
Count 19 steps.
Look to the East. Among the many trees just east of the trail is one that is larger than the rest, at the base of this tree, inside a crevice, covered with leaves sits our Princess.
**Watch out for the many thorny vines here!**

Box 4: "Flying Diva"
Begin standing on the trail where you last stopped when you found box #3. Face North.
Take 30 paces to fork in the trail.
Take the left fork up the hill and go 90 more paces.
Look South for the triple tree.
In the base of the triple tree, opposite where you now stand, in a hole, covered in leaves the Flying Diva is hidden.

Box 5: "Home Run"
Starting at Box 4, go back to trail and go West on trail 26 child like steps to the white blazed tree.
Take 66 child sized steps to twin tree on left side of trail.
Turn to compass point 330 degrees.
Take 11 steps to large tree, look in hole at base of tree to get your home run.

Box 6: "Dragon Box"
From box #5 return to trail and continue on, away from where you began.
Enjoy your walk through the woods, in a short while you will see a bridge ahead, just past the lover’s trees.
Cross the bridge to the end.
Take 48 kid steps along trail and stop. Look at the trees on the right with holes at the bottom.
Which one is it in?? The one not full of water!
Make sure to reach way back into the hole!

Box 7: "Poison Arrow"
Starting at Box 6 continue along trail 92 more steps.
When you stop, look left & you will see a twin tree with white blazes.
(Last time we were there we couldn't find the twin tree, Hurricane Irene hit hard here.)
Then go 70 more steps to the five fingered tree on the left.
Turn around and head back on the trail where you came from 16 kid steps.
Turn due South, facing the tree who lost it's twin.
Walk 8 steps toward it & you will find the final box hiding behind the tree. Congrats!
