Terrain: Easy – graded, mulched path
Clues: Easy, kid- and pet-friendly
Time: About 10 minutes, a bit longer to finish the loop
We’ve finally been able to replace this box, originally placed Nov. 2009 in Carkeek Park and re-carved Nov. 2011, this time in Discovery Park. Like the original box, this one is very family-friendly. Unlike the first, I came up with the design to make up for the lost stamp, still honoring the intent of my cousin (who is now 13). She’s (still) crazy for horses.
Best access to the park and this box is from the Government Way & 36th Street entrance to Discovery Park. Travel through the park on Discovery Park Blvd., continuing straight to Illinois, then Kansas. Turn left into the parking lot.
From the northwest corner of the lot, find the trailhead for the Wolf Tree Nature Trail. Turn right at the bulletin board, which includes a map of the trail.
Travel down the stairs, cross the stream, and go up the stairs. Take 14 paces to #3. Then, to the right, facing the babbling brook, and look slightly downhill, at the stump.
The box lies in a crevice of this stump, on the downhill side, behind a pile of bark.
This box is also now closer to two other boxes we’ve placed – check out Rain, Rain, Go Away and Blizzard Snowflake, also in Discovery Park.
