From the intersection of routes 4 and 7 in Cornwall Bridge, go north 1.1 miles on route 7 to parking area on the left at the blue oval sign. This is the Pine Knob Loop Trail, 2.5 miles long.

From the right corner of the parking area, follow the blue blazes and cross Hatch Brook until you go through a stone wall to where the “loop” splits. Take the trail to the right, following along the stone wall. You’ll go through several walls and cross a few small brooks before coming to a trail sign stating 0.4 miles. Go sharply left here and go up, up, up passing a waterfall on the left and stepping over several water bars (thanks to trail volunteers). At approximately 0.7 miles you’ll see a large ledge ahead of you and the trail (still on blue) will take you up and around the backside of this. After walking along trying to get a view of the river you’ll come to a double blazed tree with the trail going left. At this tree site 15 or 20 degrees and see some rocks atop a knoll. Look behind the pointiest one for the Pine Knob letterbox. Brown and green ink is needed.

Continue on Blue coming to another BIG up with views of the river (be careful on slick rock). Descend once again with one particularly tricky section and come to the intersection with the white trail (another set of clues would be good at this point) go left on alternating Blue and white blazes and follow these along a relatively easy uphill section until you come to a view of the valley below and the mountains beyond. Look left for a two (was once three) sister tree. Looking through the V you should see a tiny rocky ledge at the base of a pine tree four or five steps away. Look under the ledge for Castle’s In The Air #11. This box was at a recent gathering at an ice cream shop in Naugatuck so there are already some stamps in it.
Black ink will be good.

Continue on blue and white going downhill until white turns to the right. Stay left on blue going downhill and soon you’ll have beautiful Hatch Brook on your right and come upon a very large mossy boulder that looks much better from the down side (more moss there). After admiring the rock go to the next one (this one is on the left)and walk around the right side to find a tree with a hole in it. Here you will find the Hatch Brook Rock letterbox. You'll need orange or yellow ink.

There are many boulders along here. Finally you’ll come to the beginning of the “loop” go straight, cross the brook again and reach your car.
