Leaving Central LbNA #51825

Sitting at the crossroads of Highways 20 and 5 Williams used to be called Central. Though it had been renamed Williams by this time it used to be central to what is now known as Historic California Highway 99. State Route 99 once was one of California’s transportation lifelines. “This historic highway, Old 99, replaced by I-5 and other Interstates, is still largely intact throughout much of the state. It now exists in the form of country roads, alternate routes, and even main streets through the many towns it connected in the early part of the last century.” For more than most sane people might want to know, but highway buffs will surely study:

The postal service established a post office at Central in 1874. The town and post office were renamed in 1876, in honor of W.H. Williams who platted the townsite. The city of Williams was incorporated in 1920.

To locate this easy drive-by find the center of old Central at the junction of 7th and E Streets. Proceed 1.4 miles south on old Highway 99 East and park under the over-pass. The Leaving Central Letterbox is on the east side of the road. Note the pillars and proceed to the pillar second from the north. Look for the letterbox on the north side of the pillar under some rocks.

This hiding spot is not my finest and I hope the letterbox sticks around for awhile. Please close carefully and rehide so it doesn’t draw attention to itself.
