On route 168 where Phelps Road intersects, look for the blue oval sign for the Metacomet Trail. There are also two signs for the Alcorn Preserve and plenty of parking along the side of the road.
Plan on a three mile round trip unless you choose to continue on. Light blue ink would be appropriate and both boxes have log books.
From the gate take the blue trail left following along with route 168 for awhile. Come to a Chimney sign and a white trail to your right but stay with blue the whole way. Soon you’ll see white signs on trees to the left that say No Fires, No Shooting and No Vehicles but we saw plenty of ATV tracks. After a bit you might see some Suffield Nature Conservancy signs and then come to a cabin on the right with nice views to the left. At the power lines go rightish and cross under the lines to re-enter the woods. After about 10 min. (if you’re slow like a Duc) you’ll see a spot where the trail goes left to a rock outcropping with a good view but if this scares you, you can also continues straight. Shortly after this the trail will start to descend. Partway down you might see a plateau below you on the left, with a fire ring and another good view. At the foot of this hill is a good size evergreen tree on the left with a blue blaze on it. From this tree walk approximately 175 steps and look left for a tree with a burl at it’s base about ten feet off trail (this burl can be seen more easily from the other direction). Go to the back and look in a hole left by a fallen sister for box #1.
Continue on, crossing over a tumbled down stonewall and then crossing an even better wall until you have a wall following you along the left side of the trail. As you go downhill, this wall will go away from the trail but when it starts to come closer again, look left for a tree growing out of rock slabs (in front of the wall). Go around the right side of this formation and look under flat rocks for box #2.
