Savannah Series at Bastyr University (Placed for Y-Camp)
Placed by: Twilight & Sunshine (contact the placer)
Placement date: August 12, 2003
State: Washington
County: King
Nearest city: Kirkland
Number of boxes: 9

PLEASE NOTE: AS OF JUNE 25th, 2005 THESE BOXES ARE REPORTED MIA -- We'll be up there doing maintenance before long -- so hang in there -- but latest report is that all are MIA (and boy I hope they're just misplaced, cause that's 9 boxes to replace if they're really gone. bleh.)

UPDATED DIRECTIONS 23 May 2004 (w/ the aid of a very determined box hunter)

Clues

NOTE: The clues have CHANGED from the first posting – we had to move some of the boxes.

The Savannah Series is largely aimed at Kids and families *with* kids (and very British “little old ladies”, but that’s another story). It’s likely to take an hour or so, but only because you have to stop for 9 different stamps and this set of trails can be rather busy on a nice, sunny afternoon. Nicely, since it’s largely flattish and on top of a hill, it’s even ok to hike in the worst of weather (within bounds).

Difficulty: (clues/hike) easy
Dogs are fine, families are great, bikes & horses not allowed on Bastyr Campus Trails.

Bastyr University, located north of Seattle, Washington, is one of the world's leading academic centers for advancing knowledge in the natural health sciences. A twenty-five-year pioneer in natural medicine, Bastyr continues to be in the forefront of developing the model for 21st century medicine.

Driving Directions (These are the same as those to St. Edward’s, just follow the signs up to Bastyr once inside the park. Turn Left at the first chance into Bastyr’s parking lot and drive all the way to the back of the lot, park in the gravel up against the grass.

For these boxes in particular, you should climb the hill and start at the row of small deciduous trees (on the side nearest the tree line – that’s the left if you’re climbing the hill looking at them). You’ll be looking at a tennis court and some old handball courts if you’re on the right hill.

From I-405 northbound: Take exit #20-A (116th St. N.E.) and turn west (left). Travel 4.5 miles. (At 98th Ave., the road name changes to Juanita Dr.) Park & University entrance is on left.

From I-405 southbound: Exit at Hwy. 522 (exit #23-B). Drive through Bothell to Kenmore. Turn left at 68th Ave. (68th turns into Juanita Dr.) Park & University are 1.5 miles on the right.

From I-5: Take exit #175 (145th St.) and travel east to Bothell Way. Turn left. Travel north to 68th Ave. in Kenmore. (68th turns into Juanita Dr). Park & University are 1.5 miles on the right.

PLEASE replace the boxes and cover them over after you’ve found them. We want this next persons that find them to have the same joy of discovery – and don’t want *any* of them to be found and tossed by someone who doesn’t know what they’re looking at.

Letterbox Clues: (last update: August 25th, 2003)

Start from the line of small, deciduous trees at the crest of the hill. It’s best if you start near the tree line (meaning, if you’re looking at the trees from coming up the hill, to the left).

Take out your compass – find 40 degrees on it – Walk about 39 “kid” steps (that’s about 35 “adult” steps) to the beginning of the path.

Box #1: (This box is in a “team building” grove – but as the trail forces you through the MIDDLE of the grove anyway, we left this one where we first placed it. If there’s a group here, you can do boxes 2-4 and hit #1 on the way to #5.)
• Walk down the path to the “ladder” grove (there’s a BIG LOG ladder about 20’ up in the air in the middle of this grove).
• Stop at the stump (right in front of you as you enter the grove).
• Go Due North about 25 “kid” steps (that’s about 19 “adult” steps).
• You should find your first Savannah Animal behind the log, under the salal and some dead twigs and leaves. (Example of Salal below!) Granted, his kind usually likes MUCH more water, but he made an exception for this hunt.

Box #2: (THIS BOX HAS BEEN MOVED just outside the grove)
• Head down the path you find at 230 degrees. You’ll follow this path for awhile.
• At the first branch path, continue Due North.
• At the 2nd branch path, continue NW 300 degrees.
• At the 3rd branch path, continue W 280 degrees.
• At the fork, bear 340 degrees (near N) (Ignore the left spur)
• Enter the “Platform” grove (the platform is actually a little south of this grove).
• From the entrance point, find 260 degrees on your compass and behind the left end of the log (as you look at it), you will find a Miniature Mammoth hiding *just* outside the edge of the grove on another trail out of it. It’s not often one of his size will fit behind a single log…(unless someone put it up at the right end of the log...)

Box #3: (THIS BOX MAY be MIA as of May 23, 2004 – We’re checking it out and replacing it soon, but you’ll still need to go here to follow the rest of the directions – it’s only a 2 minute walk).
• While facing the log where you found #2, find 200 degrees (near S) on your compass – continue out of the grove on that path.
o Ignore the rt. Spur (that’s closest to you with a tree in the path)
• At the Fork (log at edge of path), go 290 degrees. The trail will get a little small here, but that’s ok.
• At next chance, bear 280 degrees.
• Next chance, bear 150 degrees. This is a fork with a small tree in front of you.
• Walk 12 “kid” steps (about 7 “adult” steps) to the big Douglas Fir on the right of the path.
• In the salal at it’s base, you should fine a grazing beast hiding from the safari.
• (To confirm this is the right tree, look WAY up – you should see a wire and board bridge leading from this tree and the beginnings of 2 others in other directions – it’s the only tree with 3 “wire” bridges leading off from it).
• When done, continue up the path to the main trail.

Box #4: (THIS BOX HAS BEEN MOVED just outside the grove)
• Now facing the Douglas Tree at 50 degrees (with the platform on it WAY up high), go straight through the skinny path ahead between the bushes at approx. 65 degrees.
• At the “T” intersection, go 140 degrees, ignoring the right spur trail.
• At the next trail, go 20 degrees.
• At the entrance to the “Balance Beam” Circle, turn around. Take 16 “adult” steps back along the trail.
• Stop. Look 280 degrees and you should see a good sized Nurse Stump. Sitting in the Nurse Stump, you will find Parent and Child smiling at each other.

Box #5: (THIS BOX HAS BEEN MOVED just outside the grove)
• Head Due South out of the grove (back down the path you came in).
• At fork, Go 120 degrees.
• At next trail, continue 140 degrees.
• At the next trail, Go Due East (90 degrees). The trail will bend 280 degrees.
• You are facing a burned out stump that looks like someone’s home. STOP.
• What you will now see (without moving) is at 280 degrees, a Grove with BIG cables attached to the trees at Calf Height (when connected, you can "hire wire" these cables). At 40 degrees is a pile of logs, now covered by Salal.
• At 40degrees, where 2 cut logs meet at 1 longer fallen log your next quarry lies under the shade of some salal and big sticks. There you will find nestled the rare Magenta Ostrich.

Box #6:
• Retrace your steps back to the “T”.
• At the “T” intersection, bear 120 degrees and walk under the fallen tree (this will be important again later on).
• At the next “T” intersection, bear 20 degrees.
• At the 4 way, bear 340 degrees.
• When you reach a “wide spot” in the trail, on your right there will be 3 trees and a Large Fallen Log.
• Look behind the center of the log, under some dead leaves and find the King of the Jungle taking a nap.
• **Note: if you reach the grove with rigged wires, you’ve gone too far.

Box #7: NOTE: if there’s a group in here, come back to it later – it’s relatively easy to find!
• Retrace your steps back to the 4 way intersection.
• Bear 80 degrees.
o You’ll pass a sign from behind (it’s the Welcome Teams & Leaders sign)
• Walk until you reach another 4 way intersection (this is our longest trail, and it’s not too long, so don’t worry)
• Go 100 degrees (sort of “straight”) through the intersection.
• At the “T” intersection, Go 340 degrees.
• Enter the “Climbing Wall” Grove.
• Standing at the entrance to the grove, look over at the Nurse Stump at 20 degrees.
• Hiding inside (you’ll want gloves to reach down into this stump), between 2 branches of the new growth, you’ll find a Plains Animal munching on some grass. (Be careful to recover this box with the big bark pieces – we wouldn’t want it to get carried away by some other animal!)

Box #8:
• Retrace your steps (Due South) down the trail.
• At next trail choice, Go 100 degrees (this is a slightly longer trail, so don’t give up!)
• Stay on the main trail (bearing left and ignoring the rt. Spur)
(NOTE: there's a log in the path that's 3ft high -- that's new...)
• Walk into the Grove (there’s a wire HIGH up in a tree, dangling down in this grove)
• Standing next to the Big Douglas at the entrance to the grove, bear 100 degrees across the grove to a small path that leads DOWN the hill (you'll miss it if you don't look for it -- DON'T use the path that leads back to the meadow with the sign on it, use the obscure path to it's left).
• Take 10 “kid” steps (7 “adult” steps) down the little path, staying to the left & walking over the root in the path to a Medium sized Douglas on your left – what you seek is hiding behind this tree at its base. Watch out – it’s the very rare miniature green rhino!

Box#9:
• Retrace your steps back up to the grove (about 7 of them, remember?)
• At the edge of the path coming back into the grove, bear 200 degrees (you’ll be heading out of the grove on a much larger path).
o You’ll pass another “Welcome Team and Members” sign from behind
o You’ll also pass a pretty big Nurse Stump on your right.
• Walk onto the meadow and turn a sharp right – walk along the tree line for about 150 yards or so and you’ll see a decently sized trail (this is opposite the entrance to the tennis courts that is closer to Y camp (or the Handball courts) – the 2nd one you will pass).
• Go 320 degrees onto a path back into the woods.
• When you reach the 4 way intersection again, Go Due West.
o Past yet another “Welcome Team and Members” sign
o Keep to the main trail
• At the next 4 way intersection, continue through at 260 degrees.
• At the next intersection (this one is a 3 way), Bear 130 degrees.
o Note: you will see the fallen tree that is OVER the path off the other direction (remember this from earlier?)
• You should see some VERY LARGE logs stacked – one that appears to be floating about 3 feet above the others.
• In the space between two of the bottom logs, under the “floating” log, and under a lot of sticks and twigs and dead leaves, you should find the Smiling Baboon. This is your last find of the day. You’ve now rounded up pictures of ALL the Savannah Animals!

Continue along the path, past one more “Welcome” sign and up the hill back to the meadow.

Enjoy!
