About the Westborough Charm Bracelet
------------------------------------
The Westborough Charm Bracelet is a collection of walking trails that will form a continuous bracelet around the town of Westborough, Massachusetts. It connects the communities, parks, preserved open space, recreation areas, and other trails in all sections of town. The main loop of the Charm Bracelet is scheduled to be complete in 2005. Of course, the bugs in this series are planted off trails that already exist, but aren’t necessarily connected yet. Therefore, this series gives directions to get to each box separately, or via car one after the other.

To find out more about the Charm Bracelet, or other trails in Westborough, MA, see:

THE SILLY SPIDER (planted 8/15/2003)
This section of the Charm Bracelet visits Lake Chauncy and parts of the 427 acres of Open Space in this area. It is accessible from the “Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife” building in Westborough, MA.

They have Field Headquarters on Route 135 in Westborough:

------------------------------------------

Directions:

From the North or South:

Route 495 to Exit 23 for Route 9 West ramp. Take Route 9 West straight through 1 set of lights. Look for "MassWildlife Field Headquarters Next Right" sign and take ramp for Route 135 West toward Northboro. Follow ramp to Stop sign. Turn right at Stop sign and take Route 135 West straight through 1 set of lights, past Environmental Police Inland Headquarters. Look for "MassWildlife Field Headquarters" sign with arrow on right just before North Drive and Massachusetts Technology Park signs. Turn right on North Drive and follow signs to Field Headquarters.

From the East:

Take MassPike to Exit 11A for Route 495 North. Follow Route 495 North to next Exit (23) for Route 9. Take Route 9 West and follow directions as above.

From the West:

Take MassPike to Exit 11 for Route 122 in Millbury. After toll booth follow ramp to traffic light at junction with Route 122. Turn left at light on Route 122 North. Take Route 122 North straight through 1 set of lights to Route 20 interchange. Turn right at sign marking ramp for Route 20 East. Turn right at Stop sign at end of ramp onto Route 20 East. Follow Route 20 East to Route 9 interchange. Bear right from Route 20 onto Route 9 East ramp. Merge with Route 9 East at Yield sign at end of ramp. Follow Route 9 East straight through 2 sets of lights. Look for "MassWildlife Field Headquarters - Second Right" sign and take ramp for Route 135 West toward Northboro. At Stop sign at end of ramp turn right onto Route 135 West. Follow Route 135 West under Route 9 overpass and straight through 1 set of lights past Environmental Police Inland Headquarters. Look for "MassWildlife Field Headquarters" sign with arrow on right just before North Drive and Massachusetts Technology Park signs. Turn right on North Drive and follow signs to Field Headquarters.

------------------------------------------

The Fisheries & Wildlife building is at the end of the road – a large brick house type building.
Park near this building, and start on the trail to the left of the building – looking for a metal gate blocking motor vehicle access. Hunting is allowed (except on Sunday) year round in this area, so walkers should where orange. This is an area rich in wildlife, from butterflies in the grassy meadows, to deer in the woods, to a large variety of aquatic life in the ponds.

Clues:

At the start of the trail, follow the sign to CHAUNCY – (the path to the right, which is the main Charm Bracelet trail). This path continues through a wild flower field – sprinkled with bird houses used for nesting. Take the sharp right, staying on the Charm Bracelet trail... then stay left – again following signs for CHAUNCY, and staying on the Bracelet trail. Look RIGHT and you’ll see a stone wall. At the break in the wall, and where the path goes between two stone posts, look at the post to the left and watch out for spiders here. Stamp in. You’re almost at the Lake – so if you like, continue down this wooded path, following the Bracelet signs (or you may follow your steps back). If you choose to continue to Lake Chauncy, the path becomes narrow, then exits the woods and into a clearing. Go down the hill and enjoy the view of Westborough’s Lake Chauncy.

Turn around to return, but take the path to the RIGHT, then take a LEFT following signs for the Airfield. Some days you’ll see remote controlled airplanes being controlled from this area. It’s pretty cool. The path has merged with one that should look familiar; curve to the right.

You’ll very soon take a LEFT to go home. Is there something you need to do before continuing? If so, do so, if not, go left up the field and back to your car.
