This box is located on the trail to Engineer Mountain. The trailhead is on Highway 550 north of Durango at the top of Coal Bank Pass. Turn west opposite the large parking area with restrooms.
There is a beautiful lake a little less than a mile up the trail. After the lake the the trail straightens out as it contours up along the side of a hill. After about a quarter mile the trail turns sharply back to the right.
From the point of the switchback a stump can be seen sticking up from the ground about three feet at 125 degrees SE.
From that stump, a similar stump can be seen at 245 degrees SW.
From the second stump a rocky knoll with two spruce trees growing on top can be seen at 182 degrees almost directly south. You may need to circle around to the right to avoid a swampy area.
From between the spruce trees on top of the knoll look to the west at 275 degrees. 14 steps away is another spruce. Your treasure hides at the base of this tree.
After stamping in you may wish to continue on the trail for another half mile to some beautiful alpine meadows and a view of the peak. At the right time of year a riot of wildflowers can be seen along this trail.
Distance: About one and a quarter miles each way.
Elevation Gain: Trailhead= 10,600'; Letterbox= 11,300'; Gain = 700'
Time: About 3 hours should be plenty.
