Duncan’s Paw is located at Webb Mountain Park in Monroe CT. (CT#1)

This Box is actually the beginning of my CT Quickies Boxes. Although this box isn’t like the rest of the quickies, it was my hope to create a series of boxes to honor Duncan, my recently departed dog. So the other day I was running errands and wished I could be letterboxing. The weather was sunny, warm, and I thought to myself wouldn’t it be great if you could do both? Maybe you could grab these on your way to other boxes or while running errands.

Most of these boxes are in high traffic areas so some stealth is required. My suggestion park your car, retrieve the box and bring it back to the car, stamp, log, and then return the box to its resting place. This box is easy to locate but the trail has a few uphill climbs which may be considered strenuous. Also take care when retrieving this box as it is very close to the edge of a hillside/cliff. Adults only should retrieve this one. They have all been lovingly placed in his memory.

I hope you will enjoy it and the rest of the series.

Box has no ink please bring your own

Clues:

From the main parking area of Webb Mountain Park, there is a gate which may be open depending on the time of year you are venturing here. (Feel free to drive further but, there is no real parking further down except at the very end.) Follow the gravel road as it goes down and further into the park. Duncan used to wag his tail when we got to this parking lot, I’m not sure why but he knew and loved this park.

You will come to where the blue blazed trail meets up with this road. Take the left blue blazed trail as it follows up the side of the mountain. Duncan used to look at me with those little dog eyes as if to say “really up? Why is it always up?”

You will walk the blue trail for 10 to 15 minutes until you reach a pointed rock on your right with four blue blazes on its face marking a curve in the trail. (if you begin going down you’ve gone to far)

From this rock if you look right you will see off the mountain and left follows the trail into the woods.

With the rock to your right look straight ahead you should be able to see a stone wall, which appears fragmented.

Carefully walk off trail and along the edge (don’t worry there is a good 10 feet between the stone wall and edge) keeping the stone wall on your left and the edge to your right.

Within 10-15 feet you should see a tree sticking off the edge of the mountain at a 45’ angle followed closely by a 2 sister tree with an upside down u hollow in its base. Duncan actually found this spot one day and like most dogs felt the need to “sniff” this tree.

Shortly after these two trees will be a tree which looks like a 3 sister tree but its a poser. Duncan’s paw is tucked under the pile of rocks in the center of this tree. Carefully replace this box making sure the rocks don’t slide down the hill.

To get back to your car either follow the blue trail as it winds thru the park to the end or retrace your steps. If you chose to retrace your steps and you head back down stop and admire the view that comes into sight as you begin to hear the waterfall, it’s great!

Enjoy-may the faerie dust lighten your day!
