This clue is part of the Urbana Park District’s Wild About Parks Quest--celebrating the Anita Purves Nature Center’s 30th anniversary. The Quest runs 6/13/09-6/12/10, but the boxes will remain in place indefinitely. Prizes can be won during the Quest for those who find 10, 20, and 30 boxes. Brookens Gym and Fields Clue
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 10 minutes
If you like sports, this box’s location will be a goldmine for you. Opportunities to play soccer, baseball, softball, and kickball all happen here. Plus you can fly a kite or a remote-control plane, sail a Frisbee to a friend and even rent space to host a party to play indoors.
If you haven’t been to the Urbana Park District’s gym before, it is easy to find and worth the visit. Travel east on Washington Street. At the stop for Lierman Avenue, take a left (north) and then a right at Art Bartell Road. Turn into the Brookens Complex parking lot (first right turn) and look for the walkway to the Gym. Follow the walkway toward Pod 400 and the entrance to the gym. On either side of the walkway to the entrance there are plantings, search along the concrete wall for a flat rock. Lift the rock carefully to find this site’s letterbox.
Note: This box is along a busy walkway. Please be very discrete when stamping in and please re-hide the box well.
