Take 127 to Bald Head Road
Park where it ends, then use this code:
Follow the trail to Squirrel Point Light
You’ll have to walk, don’t put up a fight.
Beware poison ivy along the marsh
Mosquitoes also can be harsh.
You might see an eagle or a seal
I’m not kidding, that’s for real.
Keep on through the woods until the beacon
Tells you you’re close to what you’re seeking.
Across the river you can see
Maine’s oldest, largest linden tree.
The frigate Squirrel wrecked on this shore
Where settlers came not long before.
The plain white house here used to be
Home to the keeper’s family
Who lit the light to guide the ships
Through deepest channels and tidal rips.
With the Light on your left as the water you face,
The southeast porch is just the right place
To look underneath for a shelter of bricks:
Close your eyes and count to six.
Then unstack the bricks to find our box green
It’s covered with bricks so it can’t be seen!
Open the box and leave your mark
Go back up the trail to get home by dark.
Before you go re-hide the box
And say goodbye to the treacherous rocks.

Hike length: 1 mile
