The middle goat is a budding artist, and this month for her Brownie Troop 10652 we made letterboxing stamps. The girls designed them, and I and one of the troop leaders carved them from their transferred drawings.

Today we are completing our letterboxing introduction by taking the stamps, and looking for a letterbox. I was going to design a new stamp, but Emily wanted to not only draw, but carve one for the first time. The beautiful result is this new letterbox.

Emily’s First Stamp is located within the Howard Porter Reservoir Trail System. As this area supplies much of the drinking water for Manchester dogs are prohibited in many areas, and most of the trails are unmarked so proceed at your own risk.

There are three main reservoirs. This stamp is located near the one by Ferguson Road next to the Highland Park Elementary School. The hike begins in the small parking area off this road.

Follow the main path, and continue past a small fork to your right. At the next large fork in the trail bear right heading downhill to a large cluster of boulders.

Bear left onto the trail keeping the brook to your right. Continue on this trail and you will see that it widens, and comes to a clearing. This is the base of the reservoir.

Either scramble to the top of the reservoir, and follow the gravel path to your right, or follow the power lines to the right and come to the top of the reservoir near a large sign, and a small grove of pine trees.

Bear right and follow the trail into the woods. Head up a slight embankment to a larger path. Turn right, and follow this path around a bend. You will see a twin white birch on your left, quickly followed by a triple black birch.

Continue until you see two boulders on your left. Head up to the boulders. From here look around and you will see in the distance a cluster of several large boulders on the next hilltop.

Head up to the cluster and look for a boulder that is half gray and half white. Emily’s first stamp is under a log and a smaller rock next to this boulder.
