***BOX IS MISSING**** As of 8/14/10 box is no longer there. This LB is now retired.

Columbia City, IN was founded in 1839. The Whitley County Courthouse was designed in 1888 and is the location of this letterbox. Parking is available around the perimeter of the courtyard.

1. Find the Civil War Memorial which has a statue of an Infantryman on top. This statue "Infantryman at Parade Rest" was made in Italy in 1896 and was purchased for $375. Standing with your back on the NE corner of the Civil War Memorial walk 45° to a different war memorial. Take a minute to read it's inscription...."Freedom isn't Free".

2. Look south and find the archway under the steps and pass through it. Continue on and find the 3rd green lamppost along Market St. Standing by the lamppost, find and walk to the nearest heavy artillery and stand under the barrell.

3. Continue clockwise around the courthouse until you find a memorial on which you can rest your legs. Sit down with Harlow Menzie at your back and then go to the blue historical marker located at your 3 o'clock.

4. With the blue historical marker at your back and facing the courthouse, walk 21 steps at 175°. Located inside this controversial deciduous (a tree that loses its leaves) is what you seek.

Please be discreet, reseal all the bags, and carefully return the LB to its hiding place. Bring your own ink.
