Nohoch Kay Beach Club

This letterbox is located at the Nohoch Kay Beach Club in the town of Mahahual located in Costa Maya, Mexico.

We planted this letterbox while on a cruise vacation.

Costa Maya is fast becoming a popular Cruise ship destination with many of the major cruise lines including it as a 'port of call' during their Western Caribbean itineraries. There are varied activities to take part in, once in port, and some can be arranged through excursions on your ship or by doing your own research online and making reservations ahead of time.

One place to visit while in port is the nearby town of Mahahual which is only a 10 minute taxi (or shuttle bus) ride away from the port. The cost of the taxi ride was recently $4 pp to the town and $3 pp back to port. The taxi stand is found after you exit the shops area near the pier. One of the main attractions in Mahahual for visitors is the "Malecon" which is a paved pedestrian pathway that runs along the beach. The main area of which is approximately 10 blocks long. Along the Malecon are various shops, restaurants and 'beach clubs' on the 'land side' and right across from them one the 'water side' of the pathway is the beach area. Some areas are just 'open beach', while in others spots the beach has lounge chairs, tables, palapas and various water toys that belong to each club across the pathway.

Down near the end of the main part of the Malecon is the Nohoch Kay Beach Club. That is where this 'indoor' letterbox is located. Nohoch Kay is a nice place to spend the day enjoying the sun, food and drinks and the water toys. Our family visited there and really enjoyed the day. The owner 'Jaime' was very personable and actually took the time to greet guests as they arrived and got them set up in their own spot on the beach with chairs and palapas. The food and drinks, brought over to you by servers as you relax on the beach, was very good. The fish tacos were excellent! But, if they are not to your liking, Jaime can pretty much have anything from quesadillas to cheeseburgers made for you. The drinks were tasty as well. It was truly a nice way to spend the day. The club is open from 9am - 5pm.

Note: some cruise ships stay on their own 'ship time' which can be an hour or two difference from the actual 'island time', so check to make sure what the island time is before leaving the ship or you may show up too early and have to wait for the club to open. As long as you stop by sometime after 9am island time, you should be just fine.

Letterbox clue:

This is as simple as it can get. Once you get to the town of Mahahual, make your way down to the Nohoch Kay Beach Club. Once there, ask to speak with Jaime. When you meet him, simply ask for the "Costa Maya 2010" letterbox. Jaime has agreed to keep the letterbox at his club and all you have to do is ask for it. Once done stamping in, please return it to him for safe keeping. The letterbox is a small lock n' lock container with cammo tape on it. I had planned on planting it outdoors but the club provided an even better place for it. While visiting the beach club, consider purchasing some food or drinks; they are reasonably priced and it would be a nice way to thank them for keeping the letterbox there. Or perhaps, if they have space available on the beach, ask Jaime about staying on the beach for the day while you are in port. Nohoch Kay only takes a limited amount of guests, so they don't get overcrowded like some of the other beach clubs.

Please remember that Nohoch Kay is a business and they may be busy with guests. You may have to wait a few minutes to get the box from Jaime. Or, consider staying awhile and retrieve the box at your leisure. If the beach area fills up, and Jaime is unable to have you as a guest on the beach, there may be a free table in the outdoor seating area at the restaurant itself. If there is no space available, as may happen when a lot of ships are in port, there are other places nearby where you may be able to spend the day at the beach after visiting Nohoch Kay. If you have made plans other than visiting the town of Mahahual, see if you will have some free time left over if you'd like to make a trip to Nohoch Kay just to get the letterbox. If the taxi area is not too crowded and Jaime is not too busy, you should be able to make the round trip (and stamp in the box) in under 1 hour. But once again, consider at least buying some drinks when stopping by as a way to say thanks.

Special Note: In August of 2007 Hurricane Dean struck this area as well as many others in the region. It did a lot of damage in the surounding town. For the most part, the Malecon area was repaired and it is a nice place to spend the day. As you take the taxi ride from the port you will see some areas that were not rebuilt and damage to surrounding trees etc. This is not a 'luxury resort'. It is a nice, laid back place and is similar to other Mexican destinations. But, it's also not an overly 'touristy' spot like the Bahamas. It is a place to enjoy a day at the beach and visit the local shops. Better yet, if you have the time, stop by Nohoch Kay and enjoy Jaime's hospitality.

Whatever you decide to do with your time in Costa Maya, we hope you enjoy your day there.
