Driving directions:

Take route 71 in Berlin, Chamberlin Highway. Heading south you will pass route 364 on the right, pass Old Hatchery Road on the left. Heading north, you will pass parking for Cathole and the Metacomet Trail. From both directions you will turn down a dirt driveway across from 2200 Chamberlin Highway and head toward a series of plastic covered greenhouses. You will see a Metacomet Trail placard immediately on your right and one in the middle of the drive. Turn right past the last greenhouse. Park in the grassy area on your right.

Clue:

Cross the drive and a small grassy area. Cross the bridge and follow the trail to the right. There are no blue blazes here, just pink tape. The blue-blazed Metacomet is up above you. This pink-taped trail is a feeder trail.

When you get to a split in the trail, go to the left and follow the trail uphill. Don’t follow the trail along the water. If you come to a no trespassing sign on a gate you went the wrong way at the split. Pink marking tapes guide you all the way to the box.

As you climb, you will see the greenhouses and the old chicken coops below you. When you pass through a second stone wall (or the same stone wall for the second time), look on the left in between the wall and a black birch for Hikers and Friends. If you come to three pink tapes hanging from a tree and/or blue blazes, you went too far.

Hopefully you’ll want to continue your hike and enjoy a mythical adventure on the blue-blazed Metacomet Trail.
