Please bring a stamp pad and pen.

As of 11/28/04 the box has been found and replaced! Yea!

This box was placed to commemorate my second completion of the News & Sentinel Half Marathon held in Parkersburg, WV each August. Whether you are a runner or a racewalker (like me) this is a great race with phenomenal crowd support. Despite my affection for the race and Parkersburg, we actually planted this box in the city across the Ohio River in the neighboring state, near where our buddies live.

The city where this box is placed has historic significance as it was the first settlement in the Northwest Territory. In this city, go to a park on Front Street along a river. (Not the Ohio River.) You will find the park after driving through two pillars. It doesn't matter which direction you drive on Front Street there are pillars at each end of the park.

Park along the river side of the street. Start at the monument dedicated "In honor of the men and women who served this community in the World Wars."

On the sidewalk in front of the monument, walk past a tree with a variety of cute "wood"land creatures. Turn right to head to the location where brides and grooms exchange vows, or where local bands might play on warm summer nights. Go up the stairs and cross through, heading to the river. At the asphalt path, head downstream until you reach a point where you can say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Turn in the direction of the flag and walk past it. Go to the front of a memorial created by Gutzon Borglum. Find the marble "plaque" that tells the story of the memorial, dedicated in 1938 by FDR, and dedicated again in 1988. While facing the statue, turn to your left and take about 5 paces. (2 steps per pace) If you get on your hands and knees and reach, you should find the box.
