Enter the parking lot next to Stephen Anthony’s Restaurant and park next to the gazebo. This is a beautiful spot to view the wild fowl. The gazebo overlooks Hager Pond.
You might see a Mute Swan, I did. It is a large white bird. Its neck is held in an S-curve. The bill is orange, with black tip and black knob at the base of the upper mandible. Many years ago they were brought to North America from Europe. Some escaped from captivity in the New York area and gave rise to a wild population. Mute Swans feed on aquatic plants and insects. Mute Swans are not really mute: the cygnets (young swans) peep, and the adults sometimes hiss or grunt. In flight the stroking of the wings produces a far-carrying hum.
So after you have finished looking at the view you stand in front of the gazebo facing south. Going counter clockwise around the gazebo, you come to a fence with a gate you do not enter. Look to your left just under the bushes. Look under the flat rock next to the gazebo to find your prize. Take it to a quiet spot from prying eyes to log your find. Then when no one is looking, return it to its hiding place making sure it is well hidden. Enjoy the view again or even go have breakfast, lunch or dinner at the restaurant or browse the other neat stores.
