Heron in the Bluffs

The clues start at Interstate Park near St. Croix Falls, WI. You will need a Wisconsin State Park pass to enter the park. If you are not familiar with the park, please take the time to get a map of the park at the office. On the map, you will find the trail named “Pot Hole Trail”. This trail is named after the natural event where sand and gravel carried along in the melting waters of the glaciers became trapped in whirlpools. The sand and gravel started to carve out “potholes” in the hardened lava of what are now the bluffs of the St. Croix river.

At the trail head, you will see a couple ways you can go. Please stay to the right on the gravel trail. Keep hiking until you start to notice the potholes. You will come to a pretty large area of the ancient hardened lava. BE CAREFUL. THE ROCK CAN BE SLIPPERY IN SPOTS. Once you are towards the middle of this area, you can see where the trail picks up again. You will come to a look out deck. This trail is pretty busy so if you need to buy some time, take a look around and maybe you will see the bird we see quite often fly over.

Sitting on the bench at the observation deck, look to your right about 45 degrees. You will see 2 large flat rocks. Take 12 steps up and over them. The box is hidden under the end of the biggest rock. There is a small chunk broken off that makes a nice space for the box.

Make sure that the stamp is cleaned and both the stamp and log book make it back inside the box and secure it tightly. To ensure the next letterboxers can enjoy the box, please place the box back where you found it.

This trail offers a beautiful example of what mother nature has done. I hope you enjoy the rest of the trail and check out the park. It has a nice beach at the Lake O’ the Dalles. If you want to make a weekend of it, the camping is a great experience as well.

Have a wonderful hike,
Five Laughing Raccoons
