Paul "Red" Adair was a renowned American oil well firefighter who became world-famous as an innovator in the highly specialized and extremely hazardous profession of extinguishing and capping blazing, erupting oil wells, both land-based and offshore. He was born in Houston and began fighting oil well fires after returning from serving in a bomb disposal unit during World War II. He founded Red Adair Company in 1959, and over his long career battled more than 2,000 fires, prompting the 1968 movie Hellfighters, starring John Wayne as Adair. He died in 2004 and is buried in Forest Park Cemetery in Houston.
Directions:
From I45 go north on N. Wayside for about .8 mile to Lawndale. Turn right and go .5 mile to Forest Park Cemetery on the right. Drive through entrance arch and go straight after circle, then bear right at next intersection and go to section 13 (Pine Terrace) near the bayou. Park opposite the Swygert tombstone on your left. Note: This is not where Red is buried; I could not find him.
Clues:
From road, walk north away from the Swygert tombstone 45 steps to a lone evergreen tree near the bayou. Go on the back side and look within the trunk for the microbox under a rock and leaves. You can stamp in while sitting on Damian's Bench nearby. Please replace as described and be discreet.
