Man’s best friend indeed. It was pouring. Rain was teeming down our windows, overflowing the ironically named flood plains. I’d just gotten milk and some groceries. I opened the front door, arms full, and he ran out. Riley had run away!

I quickly dropped my things inside and ran after him. I barely had time to lock up. He was waiting for me at an intersection. As soon as I saw him I knew what I was in for; he was ready to play fetch…only this time I was the dog and he was the Frisbee.

He took off up a street named after a measure of time + a measure of weight. Not European weight, we’re in the U.S. after all. We dashed up a paved hill, cresting with townhomes just behind us and a graveyard and single homes in the near distance.

We ran, him far ahead, toward the graveyard. I started thinking to myself how out of shape I was, and then realized I was chasing a dog that was born to run. We got to the graveyard. Again, he waited for me to catch up then bolted up the gravel path on the left, but kept going far after it stopped. He headed for a clearing in the trees. I followed, still gasping for breath.

He followed the grass patch and waited for me by a fenced in pool. The black fence seemed out of place with all of the green around it. Again, Riley took off when I was getting close. He took a right at the power-line pole down a narrow path. There were a few branches in the way, but he had slowed down. I closed in on him when he took a sharp left. I didn’t even see the tiny path there! It was nearly covered by plants! Luckily it was only about 4 paces down hill to a second path.

This path seemed to be slightly more traveled. He did a dog shake which I was unfortunately close enough to get all over my face. The rain seemed to have stopped. He ran to the right on the path, following it to its end. He did slow down quite a bit at the steep hill. Even I had to watch where I was going! And then he stopped.

There he was, sitting down on a cliff with the most beautiful view. As I walked toward him the clouds broke and the sun finally peeked out between them. I stood next to him. I wasn’t sure whether to scold him for running away or thank him for bringing me here. It was amazing. I wanted to always remember this moment, so in an old stump just before walking up the steep hill I hid something for others to find. That way they’ll always think of Riley.

Even though our super dog made the trek, you may want to leave your pawed friends in the car due to the steep hill and cliff.
