Clues: very easy
Tools: none required
Background information:
Long Pond is a remarkable body of water bisected by MA 122, one of the loveliest roads in all of Massachusetts. If you have not taken 122 all the way from Worcester to route 202 in New Salem, do so immediately in any season that you happen to be in. It’s always worth the drive.
This spot is the first place where I ever saw my daughter and her lovely blue eyes.
Directions:
From Barre:
Take 122 east towards Worcester
You drive by a reservoir managed by the state and the edge of Rutland State forest.
Fisherman’s road forks off to the left while 122 curves right stay on 122 and begin to decelerate
The parking lot for Long Pond is immediately after Crawford Street on your right.
Park in the area before the chain link fence
Proceed to the end of the western edge of the fence
From the corner post facing west you should be able to see a small gully at the bottom of a hill about twenty paces out. Beyond the gully slightly south (west south west) you will see a very large stump
You have found our letter box Please stamp your book and leave your stamp in ours.
Travelers welcome.
From Worcester:
Driving west on 122 you’ll go through Paxton passing several north south state highways
Proceed west into Rutland
When you drive through the “four corners” (an area marked by a Mobile station/Dunkin Donuts) you’ll be close.
After a slight downgrade you will see 122A (which heads to Rutland center) on your right and Long pond is before you on both sides of 122
The parking lot for Long Pond is on the left as you leave the lake behind you.
Park in the area before the chain link fence
Proceed to the end of the western edge of the fence
