Nights in Historical in Hale Forest

These boxes were part of the America Boxes gathering in August 2009 held in Coventry CT. There were 2 temporary series hidden for the day and night. (America Night Boxes in Coventry and Historic Moments in Coventry) We ( Flutterby and Pine Tree) have combined these boxes into one large hunt .

Nathan Hale Forest. From the Bear Swamp Rd. Entrance in Andover (This is a dead end and the entrance is at the end)
Box 1.
Start at the main entrance.
Continue on down the trail. Do not turn left when you come to the major intersection near the stone foundation that is on the left. There is also a campfire ring in the middle of this intersection. Instead continue straight past a few muddy sections until you come to a faint deer trail (approximately 110 paces) on the left-hand side of the trail. There is a skinny pine next to an oak tree marking the entrance of the trail. 30 steps down the trail on the right look for a 4 sister tree (3 MEDIUM SIZED AND ONE VERY SKINNY SISTER) with a log lying between them. Find Liberty Bell carved by Grumpy behind this tree.
Bonus: (25d, 5 p)

Box 2 Continue on down this unmarked trail at a N/NW direction. Continue on the trail, walking through the stone wall. You will walk over some stone walkways that were made for mountain bikes. Pass through another stone wall. Watch for a memorial to Gus on the right (YOU CAN’T MISS IT) hand side of the trail. Come to another stone wall. Stop-go left along the wall .In the corner where the 2 walls meet in front of a log you will find Fourth of July carved by Sweet Pea.

Box 3 Go back to the opening in the wall. Go through the opening and continue on down the trail to a 4-way intersection. (Remember this spot) Go right. (It’s an old dirt road) At the second stonewall, stop, and go right 3 paces. Look low in the wall for a trap door.
Lincoln waits behind this door. Carved by Sojourner.

Box 4 Cross-through the stone wall. After going through another 2 stonewalls, look on the right side of the trail for a 2 sister tree (one dead and one alive very close to the right side of the trail) behind this tree to the left is a large 3 sister tree (one is skinny dead oak) .Behind this tree, look for Honoring Lincoln carved by Sojourner.

Box 5 For the next box, continue on along the trail. You will cross over an uprooted old culvert pipe in the trail. Shortly you will come to a triangle area. Don’t go right. Go left here. Very quickly you will come to a “Y”. Go left again. Soon you will step over a large fallen tree. After going by a pile of trees laying across the trail on your left. Follow the trail West slightly downhill. You will be walking parallel to a stonewall on your right. Look right for a fallen tree across the wall. There is a double opening in the wall. Look in the pile of rocks in front of the stump behind a trap door for Little Liberty carved by AMPMTMSM.

Box 6 Continue on the trail with the stone wall on your right. The stone wall turns right but you must stay on the main trail and go left with the trail. Cross a wet area. Just before you start going down hill there will be a rock wall on your left (off in the distance). 24 paces from the trail. President Obama waits in the very end of the wall behind a trap door. Stamp carved by Mark and Sue.

Box 7 Stay on the wide main trail going over the rocks. Come to the 4-way intersection of white and the main trail. The blazes are very difficult to spot. Go left over the small section of stone wall. There is a white blaze painted on the rock wall. The trail goes over a fallen log and heads to the left uphill. Very shortly pass a small stump on the left and look right for a long fallen tree. Between the fallen tree and an upright tree waits Cathedral Rock by Music Woman.

Box 8 The trail serpentine’s uphill. Walk through an opening in the stone wall. There appears to be an enclosed area made from 4 stonewalls Walk through this area. The white trail follows along a rock ridge. Pass by a skinny 3-sister white birch tree on your right as you head uphill. There is a layer of rock ledge on the left stand on the slick rock. (With the mountain bike bridge.) Look left to a rock ledge. Your box hides under the left end. This is Mt Rushmore by Bluebird.

Box 9 Continue to follow the trail. You will come to a “Y” (you will see a rock ledge on the left.) Bear right on the white trail. When you come to stone wall. Stop Look right. You can reach the box from the trail under the lip of the mossy rock.
Bonus (340d, 6 P)

Box10 Keep walking on the trail soon you will come to a rock cairn on the left side of the trail and a “Y “ in the trail. Go right. Continue on until you come to another rock wall. Go through the stone wall and turn right and walk 10 steps. Look low in the wall for Iwo Jima by Bluebird.

Box 11. Continue on the trail to the 4-way intersection. Turn right and head towards the foundation on the right side of the trail. At the next intersection turn right (the campfire ring is here) and you will be heading back to the entrance of the park. Find the fourth break in the rock wall on the right side of the trail. (It is closer to the entrance….there is a tree across from the break with a black and orange State Land metal sign attached to it ) Go behind the wall on the right side. Look in the end.
Uncle Sam. The Event Stamp carved by Beernut. .
Bonus: (20 d, 12p)
