Holyoke is home to Heritage State Park and its many attractions. Unfortunately, that park is too well groomed & urban to have good hiding spots, so I’ve hidden my tribute to Heritage State Park up on Mt. Tom. There is a $2 fee to drive into the park on weekends.

There are 5 scenic vistas along the Rt. 141 entrance/driveway of Mt. Tom. There is a box at each of these overlooks. They can be done as drive-by or as a hike. The first 4 boxes are along a 2 mile stretch between the entrance and the visitor’s center. The 5th box is another mile or so beyond those. See a trail map here, the scenic vistas are marked with a dot inside a circle: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/trails/print/Mt.Tom.pdf
5 Boxes – Logbook in last box only.

Heritage State Park Box: (.4 miles from entrance)
Start at the First Scenic Vista. The overlook has a short brown fence along it. Start at the 4th post, face away from the view. Notice across the street a tree about 5 steps off the road with a hidey-hole in it. The hole is 5 1/2 feet up, small box is nestled in the hole.

Canal Walk Box: (.7 miles from entrance)
Start at the Second Scenic Vista. The overlook has a short brown fence along it. Start at the 3rd post, face away from the view and travel 45 steps across the road and into the woods. You will be at a tree trunk, the very small box in inside the right side of the trunk under a rock.

Carousel Box: (1.1 miles from entrance)
Start at the Third Scenic Vista. The overlook has a short brown fence along it. Start at the 4th post, face away from the view. Across the road is a large rock with a split in it. Go behind this rock and up on top of it. The very small box is inside the split on the top surface of the rock.

Volleyball Hall of Fame Box: (1.7 miles from entrance)
Start at the Fourth Scenic Vista. Across the road is a stone crusher. Stand at the stone crusher with your back to the view, travel 25 steps to a large rock. The pouch is in a crevice of this rock, about 5 feet high, covered by a stone.

Children’s Museum Box: (approx 4 miles from entrance)
The gate at the visitors center that goes the rest of the way up is permanently closed. The walk from this point to the top is 3 miles round trip. Make your way to the 5th scenic vista. Follow the brown fence to its end. At the end, continue facing the direction the fence was traveling and look into the woods and slightly to the right. See a tree trunk tree on the edge of the path. The final stamp & the logbook are resting there.
