Our letter box, Umbrella, is in Mellen,WI on a path that was once a railroad track. The railroad tracks were placed in this area because Mellen was famous for the tannery which provided much of the leather used in the United States. Today although Mellen’s tanneries are no longer in use, it is still known for Copper Falls State Park and its Blue Ribbon School.
If you are coming south on Highway 77 into the town of Mellen these directions should be perfect. If you’re coming in from the north they will be opposite. Go southeast on Highway 77 till you come to a dirt road that parallels Lake Dr. On one side you will see the railroad tracks on the other side will be the area that was once the railroad tracks. Mellen Manor is in the area, but about one fourth of a block from the path. The path is in the curve of Highway 77. The road that you need to go on is beside the vacant lot. You can park in that area. Be sure to park safely.
Follow the path of the old railroad track until you come to a old bridge. Do not go across the bridge, but go down the hill under the bridge and be sure to look up.
