This letterbox is placed in SALT ROCK STATE FOREST, Sprague, CT.

Salt Rock Forest is actually a state campground (and a well kept secret). For those of you who enjoy family camping, this is a great place! Once a privately owned campground, the Connecticut DEP now runs it. Over the last couple of years, they have been fixing/upgrading the campground site by site. There are now about 60 sites available for rental. The sites range from full hook-up to simple tent sites. All are wooded and clean. There are both swimming facilities and hiking trails at the park. The Shetucket River boarders one side of the campground, offering great Trout fishing. The strong current in the river may not be great for swimming, but we have floated on tubes down the stretch of river that boarders the campground! Great summer fun!

To get to Salt Rock: take CT-395 to exit 83. From exit 83, follow Route 97 through Occum and Baltic. Once you cross over the Shetucket River in Baltic (still on route 97), look for a school on the left side. The entrance to Salt Rock is about a mile past the school on Route 97. The sign for the forest is small and can easily be missed, so keep your eyes open.

Now the letterbox clues:

Once in the forest/campground, park near the office.

A little ways past the office, you will see a sign with an arrow.
Look above the sign and you just might see stars. While in front of the sign, look at your compass and take the trail that travels North.

At the next "intersection" follow the trail West. Does this seem "fishy"?

Continue along the trail. At the fork, bear to the NorthWest. You will be near an old phone/electrical pole. Continue on this trail.

At the next phone/electrical pole follow the trail to the right --- you should be "under the wire".

Continue on the trail down a small hill until you come to a large field. Make your way to the stone fire-pit in the center of the field.

While standing at the fire-pit, face East and walk (at about 120 degrees) about 50 steps, follow the pathway in front of you. As you walk down this grassy trail you should notice another stone fire-pit just to your right.

Continue to follow this trail (East) keeping to the right of the trail. Past the third fire-pit, but before the fourth, head East and go to the small, rocky brook. Carefully cross the brook (there should be plenty of stepping stones) and look for a small, double-trunked pine-like tree growing from the bank of the brook.

You will find the Salt Rock letterbox hidden in the roots behind the tree. Please take care in removing the rocks that protect the letterbox from the elements. It is a bit easier accessing the letterbox from the right side of the root system, as only one or two rocks will need to be removed and replaced.

We hope you enjoyed the search. If you have time, explore the campground and forest. It really is a wonderful place! Please e-mail with comments, suggestions, or news about the letterbox.

Thanks!
