This is letterbox # 2 from our trip to South Dakota. We decided to hunt the Harney Peak box and were sucessfull so we decided that it is such an accomplishment to hike and such a beautiful place it was worthy of 2 boxes. We know that will make any letterboxer 3 times blessed (1st the views and 2nd, and 3rd two boxes to find.)
Begin your journey at Sylvan Lake easy to find and a popular stop on the loop of things to see here. Begin your hike on trail #9 PLease please read the disclaimer on the trail before you begin. take plenty of water. there are no stops for water, no food Bring your lunch. there is no restroom anywhere.(think about it- be prepared) Don't be scared off We hiked this with 8 people 4 Adults, 4 kids (10,8,7,&5) They all hung with us great. the 5 got a little tired and needed some help but we did it (10:30 am - 4:30 pm) round trip . with rest breaks, photo breaks, peak break, and of course the letterbox hunt. We have also been told the trail is not existant if bad weather moves in . do not start if there is a treat of ill weather conditions. Be smart. Back to the clues-- You will hike up trail # nine until you come to the first outcropping of large flat rocks on your left. Walk carefully to the edge for a breathtaking view across to Harney Peak. Standing at the one single skinny pine take a compass reading& place Harney peak at approx. 15degrees, turn 195 degrees and now face the trail walk about 20 paces to a med. size pine tree. The box is hidden at the base of the tree under bark, needles and a rock. Be careful hunting and rehiding. The day we were there was beautiful and this spot is a definite stop and take picture place. So you may have to be secretive about the box if there are lots of people around. Continue to the top and the other box hidden after you sign in a rehide, hope you enjoy as much as we did.
