Leave No Trace Letterbox
Location - Massasoit State Park, East Taunton, MA
Approx 40 minute hike
Compass needed!

This is my first letterbox. My Cub Scouts are working on their "Leave No Trace" badge. The badge is a promise to treat the environment with respect. The scouts also have to do a service project. For my part, I have decided to plant this box in a park that we use often. When you find the box, please be sure to read the rules of Leave No Trace and make the promise yourself!

Start from the parking lot and head S towards the gate.

At the gate there are 2 dirt paths and the paved road. Take the path that heads off in a SW direction.

You will be on a windy, dirt path. After a few minutes a path will intersect that heads S up a hill. Do not take this path.

At a second intersection, take the E path that heads down hill.

You will cross a bridge and then head S over the planks towards a bench.

Feel free to sit down and have a drink of water - and pick up any trash others may have left.

Continue in a SE direction.

There will be a low hanging large tree, don’t forget to duck! About 40 feet after the tree there is a path that heads W. It would be easy to miss this path so keep an eye out for it!

You will hike on the W path for several minutes, heading uphill, and Lake Rico will be on your right side.

You will have duck under another low hanging tree which is over a large flat rock. Shortly thereafter you will come to a small clearing with several paths.

The clearing has a nice view of the lake. There tends to be a lot of trash here - please pick some up if you can. You have several choices of paths here, but most are dead ends.

You want to head SE. It is a downhill path. There is a large fallen tree to your right.

Follow this path until you arrive at the sandy area. Walk 25 paces into the sandy area. Turn around. You will see a second path to the left of the path you exited from. It is a smaller, less used path that you may have noticed running parallel to the other path.

Take this path and walk about 90 adult paces until you come to a small open area that many people use to fish.

If you look to the right, uphill, you will see the top of the fallen tree you passed a few minutes ago. In the pile of brush left by the tree, the box is hidden.
