Placophobia: Fear of tombstones.

Recent Visit: May 24, 2011

Easily accessible from either the canoe trail or the bike trail between Cannon Falls and Welch.

History: This is the site of a 1912 train wreck. The freight train was loaded with blocks of granite, many intended to be cut into tombstones, which spilled down towards the river.

From the canoe trail: Stop at the small landing just before the long fence along side the bike trail. From the landing the box is located 28 feet up the trail in direction 230°. You'll notice two large piles of granite slabs on the left side of the trail. Towards the rear of the second pile, just to the left of a medium-sized tree you'll find the box between some of the century-old, moss-covered, creepy stones.

From the bike trail: Stop at M80 (railroad milepost 80, about halfway between miles 6 and 7 on the bike trail). Notice the granite slab at the base of M80. It is one of the slabs from the train wreck. From M80, proceed about 100 feet across the road (which was where the railroad bed was in 1912) to the northwest and thence down the path another 100 feet to the northeast to the canoe landing. From there follow the directions from the landing given above.

Bring your own ink pad and stamp, if you have them. Please leave the train engine stamp in the box.

Until Nov. 1 there is a $3/day or $20/year pass required for biking or rollerblading on the trail. Otherwise it's free.
