“Slaughterhouse” Clue – Aspen, CO
At mile marker #40 on Hwy #82 into Aspen, CO, turn north onto Cemetery Lane. Drive all the way down the hill, across the bridge (over the Roaring Fork River) and turn left to park in the Henry Stein Park parking lot. You will be walking about ½ mile down the Rio Grande Trail (which is a flat, crushed gravel path.) As you near the end of your ½ mile walk, on your left is “Slaughterhouse,” Class IV rapids that are popular with kayakers and rafters. (Stop and watch the show if there are boaters on this stretch of river.) Shortly after that you will pass a small pond on your right. About 50 yards after the pond ends there is a bench off the left of the path. Two rivers, the Roaring Fork and Maroon Creek converge here and it’s a pleasant place to sit and watch the waters combine to flow down to the Colorado River. As you sit on this bench, look directly to your right and about 14 steps away is a kidney-shaped rock. Behind this rock lives the letterbox. As always, be stealthy when stamping and please re-hide the box well. Happy Letterboxing!
