"There are over 175 park sites within the Rockford Park District containing 4,833 acres of land covering 125 square miles." (Rockford Park District) That's a lot of potential for hiding letterboxes!

After the Rockford Park District was newly organized in 1909, they purchased three tracts of land that became their first park. The Indian name Sinnissippi, meaning "Clear Flowing," was chosen because that was the Indian name for Rock River. (Sinnissippi Saga) "Rockin Runners" is located in beautiful Sinnissippi Park.

For the easiest access to the letterbox, park your car in the William Charles Parking Lot. (For those who remember, this building was originally built as the Park District Headquarters!) Proceed east of the parking lot, where you will notice a covered pavilion and next to that you will see a rock wall. This rock wall was recently re-built by Dawn McGirk, a former landscaper for the Park District with help from her father. The wall is a fascinating story in itself. You might want to take a closer look at it and see if any shapes within the rocks look familiar. As Dawn was putting the rocks together different shapes took form! (A whale on the far east end, a sheep, a cross. . .)

As you are facing the rock wall, you will see a "break" in the wall, with stone steps leading up the hill. Just left of the steps, and behind the wall is a steep hill. On that steep hill, just a few steps up is an old tree stump. The "Rockin Runner" awaits you there.

The Rockin Runners is a group of young runners who frequently run the trails of Sinnissippi Park!
