Laona is a small community in northeastern Wisconsin's beautiful Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, a company town that the company seems to have all but forgotten. There is the mill and there is the "millpond," as the local residents refer to it--actually a beautiful lake with floating islands and fish and turtles and eagles and loons. I followed this one around in a boat one evening and it permitted me to take a great photo which served as the basis for this carving. The loons' distinctive and mournful calls reverberate all around the town and this letterbox is planted in memory of a father and son who lived and died here, my grandchildren's beloved "Papa" and uncle. I know they rest in peace.
From Highway 8 on the north end of town, take the Cemetery Road west. Follow the road into the cemetery. Right before the maintenance building, there is a last big tree on the left near McHugh. Approximately 120 steps toward the lake in a straight line from this point, there is a tight grouping of 14 trees. You can find the letterbox nestled among them. Please rehide well!
Have brought this box home to refurbish. May not get to replace it until the Coronavirus Pandemic is over. Stay safe, everyone.
