THIS LETTERBOX HAS BEEN TEMPORORILY PULLED FOR THE 2010 WINTER SEASON!!!!! WE WILL UPDATE WHEN REPLACED IN THE SPRING......

Boston Harbor Islands are full of great things to do & places to explore. Visit http://bostonharborislands.org for more details & information & to find out about ferry schedules & prices.

GEORGES ISLAND:
Tour this 39acre Historic Landmark Fort Warren, a 19th century granite stronghold used during the Civil War. Exploring the remparts or walk on the rocky shore. Enjoy the grassy fields and tables for a relaxing Harborside picnic. Coming spring/summer 2010 a new visitors center & childrens playround.

A BRIEF HISTORY:
At the time of Euro-American colonization, Georges Island was comprised of two drumlins(derived from the Gaelic word druim (“rounded hill,” or “mound”) first recorded use in 1833), rising out of the bay like other nearby islands. The island sustained agricultural use for two hundred years until 1825 when the US Government acquired the island for coastal defense. Over the next twenty years the island was dramatically altered and one of the country’s finest forts was built. Dedicated in 1847, the fort’s defensive design was virtually obsolete upon completion. However the fort served as a training ground, patrol point, and Civil War prison that gained a favorable reputation for the humane treatment of its Confederate prisoners. After one hundred years of military use the fort was decommissioned in 1947 and acquired by the MDC for historic preservation and recreation in 1958.

THE CLUES:
make your way to the picnic area behind the Guardhouse & below the outer defenses (this area will be to your left when on the dock looking @ the island) Once in this picnic area, take "NOTICE" of the sign that says "dont feed the geese" (there will be a fire hydrant to your right). Walk past the sign toward the water, then stop @ the railroad ties, turn to the left so that you are looking @ the docks. Take appx. 7 steps in that direction (1/2+1 R.R.tie). On your right you will see a purple flowering bush & in the distance you may see the present day view of Boston. Behind this bush there is a large boulder & under this boulder is the view that you seek.

PLEASE Be VERY Discreet in retrieveing & Rehiding this box as this area may be very busy @ times.
Also PLEASE rehid VERY SECURLY to avoid water damage (Reseal in lg baggie) & to keep it from washing away (Place heavy rock back ontop) Thank you
