Hike Distance?

This box is located at the Fort Phil Kearny Historic Site near Banner, WY (in between Buffalo and Sheridan). The site is a pay-area and costs several dollars per person to explore the fort and the two nearby battle sites of the Fetterman Massacre and the Wagon Box Fight. There isn't much left of the fort to see these days so you'll have to use your imagination!

Here are the clues:

Stop here: at first a bivouac
Then a fort over a hundred years ago
On the Bozeman Trail wagons ran
Continuing on to western land
Kearny gave his name to this camp
A walled stockade rose 8 feet high to
Defend and keep the travelers
Enterprises out of the Indians’ sight
War on the horizon, ears deaf
Arapaho, Sioux and Cheyenne draw near
Listening to the sound as wagons go
Knowing the end of a long dream
Was coming with travelers closer
An ambush waits among cacti
Yelling, Crazy Horse and warriors appearing
On the ridge, killing Fetterman’s men in a rush
Nearby, the summer Wagon Box fight
The soldiers held off many attackers
Only a few years until the tracks went
Past and a treaty closed the doors of a
Old time fort, burned before ennui
Find the one last remaining soldier
Search underneath but first find more clues
Each line has two except for the last.
