Start at the Hunnewell Visitor Center, 125 Arborway, Jamaica Plain MA.
Follow Meadow Road past the ponds to Bussey Hill Road, and look on the right for an extra long bench. Behind the bench is a tree labled “Variant of Sassafras”, walk ahead 30 paces.
There will be a double-trunked tree on your left. Bear left off the sidewalk just past this tree, and look ahead for the next large tree between the sidewalk and Bussey Hill Road. The letterbox is hidden at the base of this tree.
Most of the large trees AND the small 3-5 foot shoots coming up from the ground in this area are sassafras. This grove most likely pre-dates the Arboretum’s founding in 1872.
