The hike for both boxes is about 4 miles round-trip. The path is dirt, and partially up hill. There are many petroglyphs to enjoy. This is a new trail (2008), so the order of the boxes has changed. The Anasazi Sun letterbox is also along this trail.

The desert can get very hot, very fast. There is not much shade along this trail, so go early in the day, watch for snakes, and take plenty of water.

DIRECTIONS:
From I-15 take the Bluff St. exit, and head north. Turn left (west) on Sunset Blvd. Stay on this road and continue on it, as it turns into Old Highway 91. Soon after passing the Bellagio housing development, there will be a sign for the Santa Clara River Reserve – Anasazi Valley Trail. The sign is on the right, and you’ll be turning left. Follow this road for 1/3 mile, to the trailhead parking lot on the left.

CLUES:
BOX #2 - Panel:
At the trailhead, there is a post that says “Santa Clara River Reserve – Zone 3” and describes site etiquette. Take the trail up on to the ridge. You’ll follow a fence for a bit, then the trail veers left, uphill. This is the steepest part of the trail. As you pass the second post describing site etiquette, you’ve gone ¾ of a mile.

Aproximately ¼ mile further is another site etiquette post. This is where the petroglyphs begin. Stay on the trail a little bit further, to the next site etiquette post. Stand at the post and look between this post and the dirt road - there is a large area of flat black rock on the ground, along the ridge. There is a faint trail from this post to the slabs of black rock. Follow this trail, and at the first piece of rock, there is a spiral petroglyph, marking where the dirt trail continues on, to the left. Follow the trail on through the gap in the large rocks and walk along the very large boulder on the right. Around its corner, check out the square goat petroglyphs. Going on around this boulder, follow the dirt path along the ridge.

Stop when you see the rock in front of you with the petroglyph of a man standing with his arms out and pointing down. Left of him, is a "lobster-looking" petroglyph and above him is "13".

Beyond this rock is a very large rock with a design of the left half of a rainbow or arch. Go to this "rainbow rock" and to the right is a gap that leads to a large rock with a rounded top.

At the base of the rounded rock is a crevice with loose rocks in front, hiding Box #2.

Please be discreet – this area can be busy at times – and tuck the box back under as far as possible, with the rocks.

You will see many, many more petroglyphs if you continue exploring.

BOX #1 - Goat:
I have not measured the distance across the ridge to this box, but it might be close to a mile. Continue on the trail along the ridge, until you come to the fence. Walk to the rocky edge of the cliff, but not through the wire fence opening. To the right of the fence opening, about 6 steps over, look downward for the petroglyph of a goat carved in the dark rock, facing the canyon. A few steps more, look at another nice design.

Back to the left, continue walking (south/east) on through the fence opening and along the ridge for about 75 steps. There is a faint trail or just follow the ridge. Watch for the "feet" petroglyph in the dark rock that will be facing you, along the edge of the ridge.

While standing in front of the "feet" look to the left and see 3 big blackish rocks surrounding a smaller reddish rock. The box is nestled under a crevice of the reddish rock.

As always, please be careful when reaching for the box and be discrete, then replace the box to its hiding place.

You will see more petroglyphs if you continue exploring. Enjoy!
