Federated Women’s Club State Forest, West Street (Route 122), Petersham, MA
The road into this State Park is 1.7 miles long..very rutted and winding…do not attempt in Winter!
Are you ready to find the ladies in waiting? Let us begin your search.
After that long and winding drive in, park in the small lot on the right. The trail begins on the right, after the gate…which is usually locked. Set off up the path, you will go by high tension wires, a road that goes off to the right and finally, several campsites. Continue on straight, past the chemical toilet (unless, of course, you need to stop) and you will see a blue triangle trail marker. Follow that up the hill, go around the gate and continue until you see the blue triangle indicating a trail to the left. Take that left..and, after several steps on the trail, look to the right and see several rocks off the trail…about 10 steps away. Under an overhang on one of the rock is Marjorie. Marjorie is worried about you…she wonders why you haven’t met that special boy or girl yet..and, if you have, she wonders why you aren’t home cleaning your house instead of stomping around the woods looking for little plastic boxes. Oh, you think your home is clean enough…not for Marjorie..and she worries about that too.
Now, back to the trail. Continue on and, when the trail begins to climb and veers to the right, look for a four trunk tree with a broken snag. Dot awaits you in the crotch of that tree. She’s on the phone..of course she is…that way she can let everybody else know what is going on in the neighborhood. Good, bad, ugly..she knows it all and will gladly share it with you..not maliciously mind you…she is just a reporter wannabe…
Back to the trail…keep walking until you get to the magnificent view of the Quabbin…take a load off, sit a spell. Ready? Okay, now turn around and head back. After several steps, look to the right for lichen covered ledge down a slight decline. Head down and look to the left to find Shirley…oops, sorry..she’s reading and really can’t be bothered with you…she wishes you would just stamp and go away so she can finish this page..no wait..this chapter..oh forget it, she just wants to finish this book so she can start the next one. No offense, you are just not as interesting as the book that she is reading….
Back to the trail, keep walking until you come to a split oak tree on the right that is leaning over the path right on the trail’s edge. Look up inside to the left to find Barbara…good, old Barbara…she likes you and she wants only what is best for you so when she sees you headed out for your “little adventure” she reminds you “Did you bring water? How about bug spray? Have an umbrella in case it rains? What about a granola bar?’ Oh, you do! Did you check the freshness date on it? Don’t want you getting sick in the woods…”It’s not a bad idea to try and sneak out into your car while she’s watching the Today show…although with just your luck it will be when there is a commercial on…
Okay, keep walking back until you see a large erratic on the right with 2 smaller rocks behind it. Pat awaits your visit under the second rock. Everybody likes Pat, especially the Dads in the neighborhood. She loves to wash her red convertible in her Daisy Dukes…but Pat has a secret and she’s not telling…I might…but, then again, maybe not.
Keep heading back the way you came in. At one point you will see an unmarked path to the right that is a shortcut back to the field where the Porta-Pottie was. Either way will get you back to your car…it’s your choice but you know what Barbara would say….
