"The Swimmer" is a short story by American author John Cheever, published in 1964 in the collection "The Brigadier and the Golf Widow". The story focuses on Neddy Merrill, who despite being middle-aged, wants to retain his youth and believes that he can swim from a party to his house via swimming pools. The story is highly praised for its blend of realism and surrealism, the thematic exploration of suburban America, especially the relationship between wealth and happiness, as well as his use of myth and symbolism. You can find this letterbox dedicated to The Swimmer at Dick Nichols Park, which appropriately has a pool.
Directions:
From Austin, go south on Hwy 1, exit Davis Road and turn right (west). Go about 1/2 mile and turn right on Beckett Road. Go another 1/2 mile and turn into Dick Nichols Park on right.
Clues:
Walk south on large cement path that goes by the tennis courts for .5 mile to third manhole cover on the left and across from gravel path on the right. Follow a dirt path on the left for 58 steps, then right on a small path for 30 steps. Go left off the path 5 steps to a cedar tree and the letterbox is on the back side under rocks and needles. Please re-cover well.
