RETIRED

TERRAIN: Easy (probably stroller accessible)
LENGTH: 10 minute leisurely walk one-way

DIRECTIONS: Take Route 103 East in Kittery. Approximately 1 mile past Fort McClary, there will be a fast right with road signs including one for Gerrish Island. Take this right turn and drive past the Chauncey Creek Lobster Pound.
Take the next right onto the road named for the Native American maiden. Follow this to the right until you end up at the gate of Fort Foster.

BACKGROUND: This park is owned and operated by the town of Kittery. During the summer, fees range from $5 for walk-ins to $10 for a car, but there is no charge during the off-season. This could be a place for a family expedition as there are swimming beaches, trails, diving spots, and picnic areas. Dogs are welcome.

CLUE: Park just outside of the entrance gate. Follow the main lane along many stately oaks. Alders will line the road near a marsh on your left.
You will encounter the three common members of the squirrel family on this trip. The gray squirrel will not help you, and will probably do its best to ignore you. Chipmunks won't help you find the box either. Although inquisitive to its location, their answers will be a timid and undecipherable chirp. Lastly, a red squirrel's response will be loud and obtrusive and no help to anyone.
At the first left, take a dirt lane for a ways. Follow this lane up a rise. Although you will want to go to the left, going straight will give a great view of the Atlantic Ocean. The base of the tower is also intersting, but plays no part in finding this box. Follow the lane to the left and walk along as the road bears to the right. You will come to two rocks that direct you to the sea. Passing this natural gate, look to your right. On the seaward side of the pile of stones is the object you seek.
Enjoy the views of the water!
