*** SKIPPING STONE GULLY IS MISSING ***
- The May floods have stolen away a VERY popular letterbox that just got a new log because the old one filled up! We will replace this box ASAP. As of 6-June-2004 -

Trail System Name: Avon Nature Study Area
Entrance: West of Livernois Road on the South Side of Avon Road, roughly .25 miles west of the intersection, via Rochester Hills Drive (parking at city gov't offices for details see bottom of clues)
Entrance Fee: None

Clues: Fun and easy
Terrain: Easy to moderate (some hills and stairs), family-friendly (a goregeous and prime place to bring a picnic lunch!)
Distance: Less than .50 miles for each letter box

Box 1: Skipping Stone Gully (Geocache hybrid - take a goodie/leave a goodie!)

To the EAST of the gazebo lies the PATH where your journey begins...

At ONE an Old Overview with a nice bench for sitting, pause but do not remain...

Continue on past 2...

A place to dine beneath the trees...

The H(igh) road tempts you, but you'd rather go D(own)...

On down the STAIRS and over the BOARDWALK ...

D(own) won't do, you'll have to settle for R(elaxation) by the River...

But careful! Short of resting your toes (two before the water to sit upon), the MANICURED gives way to the ROUGH, curving off to your LEFT...

On you go until on your right, the ASPIRIN GIANT soothes away your aches, you know you're very close now...

Don't you need a glass of water to take that with? What is that just in front of you?

LEFT of and just beyond the giant, 11 PACES and the gully you'll find, hundreds of potential skippers wait in the dappled shade...

4 PACES further and slightly LEFT...

On your right two PAWNS guard their KING...

5 PACES straight ahead, you're not among a myriad FALLEN LOGS

A bit down on your RIGHT on the LEE SIDE of the MOSSY LOG tucked slighterly under, covered in blankets, stiff and brown awaits your prize...

Box 2: Rochester Falls - start at the gazebo!

If you SIT there's lots to read, but you'd rather head west of all this, down into the trees...

Wind your way down the not oft used path...

Off to the right, things drop off into water beyond...

SIX might go LEFT, but you don't...

GRASS now beneath your feet...

Weathered though it is, it's still a nice place to sit...

Is that a BRIDGE? Why not go and find out?

Past the worn EARTHEN STEPS and the "BRIDGE" instead leads you STEP BY STEP down...

11...

13 more...

Don't cross that BRIDGE (unless of course you want to picnic)...

Something FALLS to your left...

10 small PACES or a few larger ones, follow the many fallen logs, careful of that big BURROW...

On the WEST side of that huge PILE OF MATCHSTICKS you'll discover that which you seek...

Accessing Avon Nature Study Area: The entrance to Rochester Hills City Hall (and Avon Nature Study Area) lies on the south side of Avon Road, roughly .25 miles west of the intersection of Avon and Livernois Road. If you follow Rochester Hills Drive up and around, you'll find ample parking on the left side of the parking lot. The trailheads are well marked and easy to find, just look for the gazebo. A note to pet owners: this is a conservation area and not dog friendly. (Though locals bring their dogs through anyway, and we know letterboxes would clean up after their pets...) Hey - Enjoy this wonderful and little used area, and be sure to visit our other letterbox, Guardian's Point, on the other side of Livernois!
